Here we are again, my friends. As I write this, we are about three weeks from Thanksgiving and two days from what feels like the biggest election our country has ever had. Of course, I don’t need to recap the unbelievable year 2020 has been or go through the horrible pandemic statistics. Let’s not forget the financial fallout either. It feels like the trials of Job all in the space of a few short months. That isn’t news to anyone, that’s for sure.

n this season of Thanksgiving, and in the face of all this, you may be asking yourself why you should feel grateful when things are not great right now. I know that’s the understatement of the century, believe me. However, I would argue that because of all these difficulties, it’s more important than ever to practice gratitude and celebrate as much as we possibly can. Now, I can end this blog right here having said something that I believe is valuable. With the state of things the way they are, I feel like we all need to give each other permission to feel good and be happy. For some, that might be the best we can do.
However, that would be shortchanging you because there is so much more to say on this subject. Starting with how, in the light of such unbelievable difficulty, gratitude can be a lifeline. It can be the thread that you grab on to in the middle of this mess that gets you into the next moment. You may say that it’s impossible to find things to be grateful about in the current world and I can see your argument. It may seem like there is just nothing to give thanks, these days. I think there is. Even while this world is in a crazy situation, it’s possible to find things to be grateful for and it’s more important to do so, now more than ever.
I’ve written about gratitude a few times over the years. You can find my favorite gratitude blog here. To help you find your gratitude footing in this the start of the 2020 holiday season, here are a few things I’m continuously grateful for.
- The continued health and well-being of loved ones. I know that’s an obvious one but really, every time I look around and see every chair filled with family and friends, even if it’s only on a Zoom call, I exhale a little. At the end of the day, our relationships and the people around us are what really matter.
- The understanding that this, too, shall pass. I once heard someone say that “trouble doesn’t last,” and that gives me great relief right now. I know this to be true, that even though things may seem like they will stay this way forever, the truth is they will not. Tomorrow is another day and time marches on. Hopefully, so do we!
- The knowledge that nothing is impossible. This one is probably the most important thing I am grateful for. I really do believe anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Even though it may seem like the odds are stacked against you, life can turn on a dime and surprise the heck out of you. The trick is staying positive and refusing to give up. That’s the hard part. If you can do that, you can do anything.
As a personal finance blogger, I realize you may be looking for money saving techniques or some other financial insight. Believe me, I’ve been writing and recording so much content about personal finance that there is plenty for you to read, watch or listen to on that subject. I think right now, at this point in 2020, I would rather write about something that I feel is uplifting. Believe me, better days are coming. Hang in there, my friend!
Sincerely,
The Dollar Lama
