NewCashView.com was started by Joy Alford-Brand, a licensed attorney since 1999 who wanted to help people manage their money so they could live happier, more healthy and peaceful lives.

In her work as a bankruptcy attorney for 16 years, Joy has seen how people manage their money and what finally drives them to file bankruptcy.

Joy was the youngest of four siblings and saw how the lack of money affected her parent’s relationship that ended in divorce. Joy made the decision that when she grew up, she would have money and not go down the path her parents did. She took the steps in her personal and professional life to manage money in a positive and enlightening way.

She grew up near Dayton, Ohio, and earned a degree in history from Wright State University. She went to The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and received her Juris Doctor degree in 1998.

She opened her own practice in 2000. Joy became the Assistant District Attorney for the State of North Carolina in 2006 and for three years was responsible for the prosecution of domestic violence cases in New Hanover County. She moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, to work for law firms doing bankruptcy, criminal law, social security, civil litigation, intellectual property litigation, and family law.

In 2010, Joy re-established Alford Law Firm PLLC, a small practice focusing on bankruptcy and criminal defense. Eventually, the firm generated nearly $400k a year, at it’s peak. Her determination to share her money management and personal finance knowledge with others came while Joy was overseeing a case in bankruptcy court. A husband and wife were in court that day having filed bankruptcy, something Joy saw quite often in the more than 300 bankruptcy cases she handled throughout her career. But there was something about this couple.

And then it hit her– she represented them in court 10 years earlier. Here they were filing for bankruptcy a second time. She took it personally. What could she do to keep families out of bankruptcy court and not just fix their immediate problem? How could she help improve their money management skills and get them on a path to positive cash flow?

In 2015, Joy launched NewCashView.com, a website where she shares online video courses, a blog, books and resources about money management for people starting out or starting over.

Joy shares her knowledge, humor and wit through two books she’s written– Money Basics: Keeping It and Growing It. What I Learned About Money as a Bankruptcy Attorney available in paperback or e-book and her second book called Parents’ Guide to Better Borrowing, to be published soon!

Joy gives back to her community by helping teach basic money management skills to high school students and small group adult classes on how to create a budget. She’s been an active member of Women in Networking, The Junior Leagues of Wilmington and Raleigh and served as president of her Research Triangle Park Rotary Club.

As a bankruptcy attorney, money management educator, personal finance advocate, author, blogger and speaker, Joy is helping people manage their money mindset for happier, more peaceful lives.
